History

Bendon is a Kiwi icon, with over 60 years of successful lingerie design and marketing experience in New Zealand and Australia. The brand was founded in 1947 by Ray Hurley, a demobbed naval officer and his brother Des, a professional pattern cutter.

Called Hurley Bendon, the brothers’ company revolutionised the lingerie industry with a radical new approach to lingerie design. Rather than force women’s bodies into restrictive and weighty corsetry, the Hurley brothers looked at the way that the body moved and developed designs to reflect that movement. The name Bendon was a literal description of how the new lingerie could “Bend On” the body, marking a departure from the heavy wire, steel and bone foundation garments that were prevalent.

From then on, innovation has been key to Bendon’s success, pioneering lingerie making in Australasia with such technologies as the first New Zealand stretch-moulding machinery to manufacture seamless bra cups.

Today, Bendon continues to push the boundaries and be a leading player in the Australasian lingerie market with advancements like the revolutionary new Bendon Sport range launched in 2005, combining glamour and superior performance.

Bendon shares its name with its parent company Bendon Limited. Along with the founding brand, Bendon Limited has developed a prestigious portfolio of lingerie brands including its licensed Elle Macpherson Intimates, hey sister! Fayreform, Bendon Man and the licensed Macpherson Men.

A network of 22 premium Bendon Lingerie retail stores are located throughout New Zealand and Australia, with a further 12 in the Middle East. Some of our brands are also stocked in the UK, USA and other international markets.
